Established in 1986, the School of Law is the law school with the longest history and largest scale at the university. In March 2019, with the support of the Ministry of Justice and the Shanghai Municipal Justice Bureau, and to further enhance its distinctive features, the university established the School of Mediation (operating as one entity with two names alongside the School of Law). This is currently the only school in Chinese higher education institutions named Mediation and is dedicated to cultivating high-level mediation professionals. Concurrently, the Ministry of Justice approved the establishment and designation of the Ministry of Justice Base for Theoretical Research on Mediation and Talent Training at the university.
The School consistently adheres to the goal of holistic education and has established a talent cultivation mechanism oriented towards societal demands. It currently offers four undergraduate program tracks: Law (Innovative Class for Outstanding Legal Talent), Law (Civil and Commercial Law Orientation), Law (Mediation Orientation), and Law (Sports Law Orientation). At the postgraduate level, it offers Master's programs in Jurisprudence, Constitutional and Administrative Law, Procedural Law, and Civil and Commercial Law, as well as Juris Master (JM) programs with specializations in Government Legal Affairs, Civil and Commercial Law, and Intellectual Property Law. The current student population includes 423 postgraduate students and 1,377 undergraduate students, totaling 1,800 students.
The School boasts a strong teaching faculty with a rational structure. It currently has 53 faculty members, including 30 with senior professional titles and 17 with intermediate professional titles. Approximately 60% of the faculty hold doctoral degrees or are currently pursuing them. The School has five teaching and research sections: Jurisprudence and Legal History, Constitutional and Administrative Law, Civil and Commercial Law, Procedural Law, and Mediation. It possesses one Shanghai Municipal-Level First-Class Undergraduate Course, nine Key Undergraduate Courses recognized by the Shanghai Municipal Education Commission, and ten university-level key or distinctive courses.
Administrative Law is a Shanghai Municipal Key Discipline. Both the Administrative Law and Civil and Commercial Law disciplines are included in the Shanghai High-Plateau Discipline Development Program in Law. The School's existing academic platforms include one base (the Ministry of Justice Base for Theoretical Research on Mediation and Talent Training) and six research centers: the Shanghai Research Center for Review of Regulatory Documents, the Research Center for Inner-Party Regulations, the Research Center on Elderly Law and Rights Protection, the Administrative Law Research Center, the Procedural Law and Judicial Reform Research Center, and the Civil Law Methodology and Case Study Research Center.
